How to Care for Gold Plated & Pearl Jewelry (and Everything Else We Make)
Handmade jewelry is meant to be worn and loved, and a few simple habits go a long way toward keeping every piece looking as good as the day it arrived. Our collections use a mix of materials, so care looks a little different depending on what you're wearing.
Caring for 14k Gold Plated Pieces
The gold beads and findings in The Reserve at Wild Willow are 14k gold plated. A plated finish stays bright longest when it's protected from friction, moisture, and chemicals. Put jewelry on last, after perfume, lotion, and hairspray. Take it off before swimming, showering, or sleeping, and give it a gentle wipe with a soft, dry cloth after each wear to remove oils and residue.
Caring for Genuine Freshwater Pearls
Pearls are organic and softer than metal or crystal, so they need a gentler touch. Wipe them with a soft, dry cloth after wearing, and never use jewelry cleaner or an ultrasonic cleaner on pearls. Store them flat, away from other jewelry, so harder materials don't scratch them. A soft pouch or a lined jewelry box works well.
Caring for Crystals, Miyuki Beads & Gold-Toned Findings
Our other collections, Willow's Stacks, Willow's Ensembles, and The Charmed Willow, use crystals, Miyuki Delica seed beads, and gold-toned findings. These pieces last longest if you keep them dry, avoid harsh chemicals (chlorine, cleaning sprays, and perfume sprayed directly on the piece), and store them separately so they don't tangle or scratch each other.
Daily Habits That Extend the Life of Any Piece
A few habits work for every material we use: put jewelry on after you're dressed and done with hair and makeup, take it off before workouts, showers, or swimming, and give it a quick wipe before putting it away. It only takes a few extra seconds and makes a real difference over time.
Storage Tips for Your Growing Collection
Keep pieces separated in a divided jewelry box, small pouches, or even resealable bags, so chains don't tangle and harder materials don't scratch softer ones like pearls. Store everything somewhere cool and dry, out of direct sunlight, and your collection will stay ready to wear whenever you reach for it.
